ZymoChem, a biotech company dedicated to creating sustainable materials for everyday products, announces the launch of Bayse, the world’s first scalable, 100% bio-based, biodegradable super absorbent polymer (SAP). This innovation will revolutionize the $145 billion global hygiene industry, paving the way for a more sustainable future.

Bayse is a drop-in replacement for traditional fossil fuel-based SAPs, a key ingredient in single-use absorbent hygiene products like baby diapers. Unlike petroleum-derived polyacrylates, Bayse is made from renewable resources, has a lower carbon footprint, and readily biodegrades, addressing the environmental impact of 300,000 diapers going to landfill or being incinerated every minute.
"At ZymoChem, we are committed to accelerating the transition to a true zero-emission economy by developing bio-based materials for everyday products. With Bayse, we are tackling one of the world's most wasted items head-on, providing a sustainable solution that does not compromise performance or economics," said Dr. Harshal Chokhawala, CEO and co-founder of ZymoChem.
ZymoChem's proprietary technology platform enables Bayse to be produced at a cost comparable to traditional SAPs, ensuring sustainability is achieved at no additional cost. With a mission to create positive environmental impact and inspire change across industries, ZymoChem's Bayse has additional applications in industries such as agriculture, cosmetics, and water treatment. Microplastics generated by fossil-based petroleum SAPs have been a concern for these industries, and Bayse is targeting them as a high-performance, microplastic-free alternative.
ZymoChem recently raised $21 million in Series A funding to accelerate the commercialization of Bayse.
