Class Action Lawsuit Filed Against Kimberly-Clark

Huggies maker Kimberly-Clark has been sued in New York federal court over the labeling it features on its Huggies Pure and Natural diapers and Natural Care wipes. The class action lawsuit filed by two plaintiffs claims K-C used misleading statements about its supposedly “natural” diapers and wipes, which the plaintiffs say actually contain harmful, unnatural ingredients.   The plaintiffs, Christina Franjul and Veronica Brenner, allege they purchased these items under the belief that they were safer and more environmentally friendly than conventional diapers and wipes on the market, relying on packaging that feature the statements “pure and natural” and “natural care.”   “Unfortunately for consumers, these representations are not true,” the lawsuit alleges. “The diapers are neither pure nor natural because they contain unnatural and potentially harmful ingredients such as polypropylene and sodium polyacrylate."   Also according to the claim, the women say the soft organic cotton used in the diaper is only present in the backsheet of the diaper—an area that doesn’t even touch the baby’s skin.   The class action lawsuit alleges K-C’s representation of the diapers through its labeling claims are false and deceptive to consumers.   The lawsuit also claims that Huggies Natural Care wipes contain sodium methylparaben, which is banned in the EU because it can strip pigment from skin, as well as methylisothiazolinone, a chemical linked to skin toxicity and allergic reactions. The claim alleges that these chemicals are not considered natural and that K-C failed to list these ingredients on the front of the packaging.
